Modern day women could learn a lot from Henry VIII’s second wife Anne Boleyn, when it comes to relationships.
I’ve noticed lately that women have become passive aggressive in their dealings with their significant others. They want to be told what to do. They want to be told what to want out of their relationships. They almost seek permission to ask for more. They cower in fear over what society will say, what others will think, if they open their mouths and actually express themselves. The last thing they want is to rock the boat and wind up dumped.
Of course, they never think that they have a right to end the relationship, themselves. That would be foolish.
After all, eligible women far out-number eligible men, with new eligible women turning 18 every day. There’s no escaping it! Many women feel they are kicking themselves in the butt if they end a relationship with one of the few, coveted eligible men available. He will have no trouble finding a new mate and she will probably live her life childless and alone.
It’s a giant risk to ask for what you want in such an environment.
But what I say is this: take a page from Anne Boleyn’s book.
Anne Boleyn, a relative commoner, stole the heart of Henry VIII and sent him to war with Rome and the Pope himself (in Reformation England!), in order to get a divorce from his wife, a true Princess of Spain. When the Pope refused, Henry created an entire religion in order to divorce Katherine of Aragon, and disinherit his only legitimate heir (later known as Bloody Mary for her F*ed daddy issues and misguided Catholic guilt), in order to bed the commoner Anne Boelyn and put her on the throne as Queen of England.
What that tells me (and should tell you) is that Anne Boleyn had some serious game.
In what universe does shiz like this happen? No commoner ever had the gaul to deny the King of England. He bed laundresses and scuttle wenches, when and where he chose! He had royal affairs and experimented extensively with courtly love, producing more than one bastard child–two of them with Anne Boleyn’s younger sister Mary!
But when Anne Boleyn was approached with the expectation that she’d give up the poon-tang, Henry was met with a firm refusal. Anne may have been a commoner and Henry may have been King of England, but Anne Boleyn was the Queen of her body and not about to become another single mother to the fourth (acknowledged) bastard heir of the Tudor king. She instead sought to oppose Henry with her quick-wit and intellect. She argued with him on almost every political and theological topic at the time. She was resolute in her discourse and didn’t care who Henry was and what respect she owed him. She told him that until he divorced his wife and married her, he would not get what he wanted from her!
Henry was hypnotized. He wasn’t accustomed to women knowing their worth. He was certainly shocked that anyone should ever disagree with him and found her captivating for bucking the norm. As a result, she forever changed the monarchy, history and the faith of millions.
Anne Boleyn’s ambitions were so high and her belief in herself so great, that I would declare that the ramifications of her beguilement were the straw that broke England’s back, setting the stage for the formation of the United States of America. People made the decision to risk their lives, get on a wooden ship and flee to an unknown, untamed land miles across the Atlantic Ocean, to get away from the type of shiz Anne Boleyn caused!
Of course, after Henry finally had what he wanted (the poon-tang), she met her fate on Tower Green by way of guillotine, (but up until then I’d say she played a marvelous game). In retrospect, she was a shining beacon for women everywhere.
Anne Boleyn knew what she was worth, and she was willing to go unmarried and without children at a time in history when no woman could afford such a fate. She knew what she deserved in life and didn’t care who had what to say about it. If she couldn’t have the very best, she would have no man at all.
Modern women could learn a thing or two from such a woman.
