If you were born today, you’d never know the anguish of dial-up internet.
You’d think black people were always treated equally. Same for women. You wouldn’t think anything about your brother being gay, and couldn’t imagine a world where anyone would kill for that. You’d think the sun was always this hot. And storms were always this devastating. You’d think wars were fought with drones, and never imagine why anyone would physically show up to engage in combat. You’d think everything has always been made in China. AIDS would be par for the course, and online dating would be equivalent to formal, old-time courting. If you were born today, you’d think cancer was inevitable. Credit cards would be a given. Fast food would be a staple. If you were born today, YouTube would be your big break. Facebook would be your clique. You’d own a laptop, instead of a TV. If you were born today, you would care about the planet. You would learn the correct way to recycle, and get annoyed by people who didn’t.
If you were born right now, your mother would Instagram your naked, newborn self, as soon as you were in her arms. Instantly, a thousand or so people would know you exist. Your Dad would take paternity leave and your mom would pump you breast milk at her office desk, on her lunch break.
If you were born right this second, it would cost more than a new car, but you wouldn’t have to worry about complications, or birth defects or any of that. You’d be fine.
If you were born today, or tomorrow, or next week, you’d have life experiences that would’ve been considered fiction, when I was born, just three decades ago. If you were born today, you’d be in a whole new world. And most of all, if you were born today, you’d know it’s because someone wanted you. You weren’t an accident. You weren’t a mistake. You were both wanted and loved.
