As far as I know, abortion has been legal in the United States since I was a teenager, yet month after month, there are stories in the news about the legalization of abortion. And if it’s not abortions, it’s the morning after pill. Then it’s late-term abortion. Then it’s age restrictions on abortions. (If you ask me, if you are younger than seventeen, you should be forced to have an abortion, not legally prevented from having one).
I simply don’t understand.
Nobody wants to have an abortion. They don’t go out, pick up a guy, and think, “no condom, fine, I’ll have an abortion”. It isn’t something that every little girl grows up hoping to experience, but guess what, shiz happens, and decisions get made.
And just because you have an abortion, doesn’t automatically mean you are a S-L-U-T. I know there’s a lot of slut-shaming that goes along with talk of the big A, but it’s simply not true. All that stems from the long held societal belief that women who have sex are dirty, shameful, etc, while men are encouraged to have as much sex as possible with as many girls as possible. If the girl gets knocked up–it serves her right for being a hootch. If the guy knocks her up, it’s all, “good job sport! look who’s super fertile! Now let’s encourage her to have an abortion, so she doesn’t ruin your life with some unwanted child!”
Out of the many arguments against abortion, I sympathize most with the religious folk who say a child is a child from the minute of conception, and to end the pregnancy would be morally wrong. I get that. That’s a valid opinion to have, and I totally respect your right to have it. SO… I say to those religious people, “then You don’t have an abortion”. You go ahead and make the choice that is best for you. I take no issue with your choices! All I ask is that every female has that same consideration.
And for the record, making abortion illegal would not stop it from occurring. All it would do is put the mother at a greater risk for infection, infertility, and death. That’s the reason it became legal in the first place, because women were going to unlicensed physicians for the procedure, and they were dropping dead!
I believe if we are going to call ourselves a free society, we should stop policing each other’s reproductive decisions.
And fine–the government doesn’t want to pay for it, no problem! Don’t pay for it. But don’t go trying to reverse the law so doctor’s can’t perform abortions for their paying customers. Don’t go telling teenagers that they are too immature to decide to terminate their pregnancies, so they should instead, go ahead and become somebody’s mom!
I’m tired of this abortion debate, over and over, every day! Are we still wobbling over slavery? At any moment can a black person in America get thrown into a cotton field and become some white man’s property? And why not? Because that law got written a long time ago, just like the legalization of abortion. Let’s move on people.

Well, because women are still property in many peoples eyes and the notion that property should have rights and be regarded as human *gasp* is simply beyond the pale.
