I admit, I don’t watch MTV, (with the exception of Teen Mom), so last night I missed the MTV VMA’s, but there is simply no ignoring the outrage at Miley Cyrus’ performance with Robin Thicke. On Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, all I can see are comments about the sad fate of Disney stars and general disgust for Miley Cyrus and her crude and vulgar dance moves. So here I am thinking–oh my God, what did this girl do? Did she actually perform some satanic ritual on stage, like biting the head off a dove (circa the beginning of Ozzie Osbourne’s career), or engage in some strip tease, snake handling, simulated masterbation scene like Britney or Madonna? I was genuinely worried, because like the rest of the world, I kinda like Miley Cyrus, and I think she has a pretty good voice and a strong, sense of self, so I YouTubed the video, to see what exactly had the online community so up-in-arms.
And honestly, I was kinda like, “what’s the big deal?”
I mean, I’m not alone, right? All this video is, is a twenty year old girl, dancing with teddy bears, sticking out her tongue a lot, and shaking her butt randomly while scantily clad. It was not impressive, nor particularly shocking, nor particularly entertaining. Perhaps I am de-sensitized because I host a little dancehall event every week called Mojito Monday, where women dance on their heads and “twerk” til the early hours of the morning hoping to seduce one of the many dancehall artists in attendance to hire them for music video purposes (or personal purposes, I suppose, as well). Maybe I am from a generation where Britney spears stormed the VMA stage in a nude sequined number, groaning about not getting any satisfaction, with a giant yellow snake wrapped around her shoulders, and put down a dance routine that left the whole world scrambling to keep up. Or maybe it’s because, unlike people my age, I have a chance to actually see the music videos that accompany the pop songs out today, because they are constantly playing on the TVs in my bar. (Yes, I admit, the music videos have taken a turn for the dark side, and many of them, I cannot force myself to watch, especially videos featuring that devil-possessed Rhianna chick).
But, come on! You honestly think that Miley’s performance was something to get outraged about? It was un-coordinated, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants choreography. I just watched it and I already have forgotten it. What is the real issue here? Are you having an issue with racial stereo-type stealing, like Jezebel? Are you a mom? Are you Will Smith’s kids?
What were they doing there anyway? VMA’s are notoriously raunchy. Sure, MTV is aimed at teenagers and young adults, but I’d personally prefer my kids to watch from the safety of their couches at home–where I can turn off the channel if something like this came on.
Anyhow, my point is–are we really that prudish? It seems as if we are regressing as a society. We are no stranger to the relationship between sex, art and music. In fact, the closer the relationship, the more the music sells. So let’s all stop playing the part of the embarrassed, judgmental mob, and try to remember what we were doing at twenty….

I don’t think of myself as a prude… It was not the costume nor the dancing. For me, it was just forced, uncoordinated and unnecessary. I guess in that case I shouldve ignored it and deleted the images from my mind! By the way, Rihanna’s reaction matchesyour description hahahahahaaaaa!! Rihanna had the blankest stare I’ve ever seen!
